Volunteer
GCGA, Gulf Coast Chapter, is always looking for volunteers to help in many aspects. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and it is only through our volunteers that we are able to do the work we do to help the greyhounds. You may volunteer as much or as little time as you like. All our volunteers are extremely valued and appreciated.
Here are some ways you can volunteer:
Foster a Greyhound
There is always a GREYT need for Foster Families. It is only through our foster homes that we are able to take in the greyhounds to transition them to retirement life and prepare them for adoption into their forever home.
Fundraising
The adoption fee for each greyhound that we place in a home only covers a portion of our expenses for that dog. Therefore, we have to raise the funds we need to help the greyhounds. We try to coordinate and participate in as many fundraising events as possible. We are always seeking help coordinating and facilitating these events. We always welcome ideas you have regarding fundraising opportunities.
Transporting Greyhounds
We routinely transport greyhounds from Derby Lane to foster homes or to the vet, to Meet and Greets, and to the greyhounds’ new homes. We need volunteers to help with these transports.
Special Events
GCGA hosts and participates in special events throughout the year, such as the Semi Annual Greyhound Picnic, Yappy Hour, Dogtoberfest, etc. These events takes a lot of coordination and work. Special events are an important means to raise awareness about this wonderful breed and also a means to raise funds so we can continue our mission.
Soliciting Donations
We are always in need of donations to help raise funds. This most commonly is in the form of merchandise or gift cards from various businesses (restaurants, stores, etc.), as well as merchandise from various vendors of pet items. If you have a special talent like art or jewelry making, donating a hand-made item for a raffle would be GREYT! These items are auctioned or raffled at our picnics and various functions.
Community Outreach and Public Relations
We are sometimes asked to bring greyhounds and speak about our organization at schools, retirement facilities and other events. Spreading the word about the wonderful nature of the greyhound breed is a very important and critical mission.
Attend Meet and Greets
Meet and Greets are the events held throughout the area where we show adoptable greyhounds and educate the public on the wonderful nature of this breed. Meet and greets are usually held on the weekends.
Administrative and “Behind the Scenes” Work
We are in greyt need of volunteers to help with various aspects of the “administrative” side of things such as maintaining our Petfinder account and Facebook Page, preparing and updating new greyhound documents, agreements, etc.
We are always welcoming new ideas! Let us know what you would like to do to help the greyhounds.
